Benjamin Bunny

The delightfully mischievous cousin of the ever-popular Peter Rabbit, Benjamin made his first (and only) appearance in Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, published in 1904 by Frederick Warne & Co. The book became an instant commercial success and sold thirty thousand copies by the end of the first year.

Story Synopsis

Aware that Mr. McGregor and his wife are away from home, Benjamin Bunny and his cousin Peter Rabbit venture into Mr. McGregor's garden to retrieve the clothes Peter lost there in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. They find and take the clothes off a scarecrow. As a result of his previous experience, Peter is apprehensive about lingering in the garden but Benjamin delays their departure by gathering onions along the way and wrapping them in Peter's handkerchief. He then takes a casual stroll around the garden, followed by an increasingly nervous Peter.

Rounding a corner, they see a cat and hide under a basket, but the cat then sits atop the basket for hours, trapping them both. Benjamin's father enters the garden looking for his son, drives the cat away, and frees Benjamin and Peter, giving them both a beating with a switch before taking them home. When McGregor returns, he is puzzled by several strange things in the garden (aside from the scarecrow's missing jacket and shoes), but Peter's mother forgives him since he has recovered his clothes. Peter gives her the onions.
